Random Disney Thoughts

Best parts of Disneyland

There are nine different lands at Disneyland.  I've decided to share what I think is my favorite thing from each one!

Main Street U.S.A. -- I love the Disneyana store!  I can't afford most of what is in the store, but I love to see all the different ways that Disney inspires people.  Art, collectibles, books and print, jewelry, I look at everything.  Some of it catches my eye more than others, I prefer certain styles to others, but that is the beauty of it, right?

Tomorrowland -- Lots of fun in this land.  I always ride the Monorail because it gives me a view of the entire Park.  As a kid, I always tried to ride in either the front or rear cars because it was very cool to have the cars all to ourselves! There have been five different 'generations' of Monorails in Disneyland's 60 plus years!  Want to know what it feels like?  Climb aboard:

Frontierland -- I'm going to admit I'm partial to Tom Sawyer's Island.  The snack shack on the island inside Fort Wilderness was part of my food division when I worked at Disneyland, and I spent a summer out there all by myself.  It definitely had it's charm! To get there and back I got to ride the rafts to and from, and in order to fit as many folks as possible on the raft, I would get to ride hanging on the outside of the platform.  Extra daring!  They've redesigned things and now not only is there no snack shack, you can no longer go inside Fort Wilderness.

Adventureland -- The back side of water! He'll trade you two of his heads for just one of yours! So many bad puns on the Jungle Cruise.  I could probably be a skipper because I know the entire spiel! Enjoy this video:

New Orleans Square - My favorite restaurant in Disneyland is here (no offense to where I spent eight years of my life, Hungry Bear Restaurant), Blue Bayou!  It used to be the only place to get a Monte Cristo sandwich and only for lunch, but now you can also get them at Cafe Orleans across the way.  Plus it's dark and a great place to escape the heat of summer!  But it's super busy now, walk ins are a rarity, so if this is where I'm headed for lunch, we're zooming there first thing for a reservation or better yet, you can make reservations online 60 days before.  Is the food worth all the trouble?  Maybe not.  But you go for the ambiance, it's cool! And these guys loved their meal:

Critter Country -- Formerly Bear Country, this is where I spent the majority of my time when I worked here.  It looks very different in many ways from that time period, Hungry Bear Restaurant finally has the ramp on the correct side and where this land used to be a dead end in the Park, there is now a path into Galaxy's Edge.  My favorite thing here are the Davy Crockett Explorer Canoes.  Now it's been years since I've been in them.  But when I worked here, summers meant canoe races for the Cast Members. I think I raced for seven of my nine years with a team from the restaurant.   We got in the Park early (as early as 5:00am) to have a time slot to train, we'd have breakfast somewhere out of the Park and then head back to work. The actual racing events lasted about three weeks.  We never won, got to quarterfinals one year, and the actual canoe Cast won every year because they were pros after doing this all day, but it was always a lot of fun and harder than it looks! Here's a video:

Fantasyland - For many this is their favorite land (it was Walt Disney's favorite land), and Sleeping Beauty's castle is the icon used for Disneyland.  I have two favorites here and I just can't choose one.  You could say they are on opposite ends of the spectrum.  The first is It's a Small World.  The one here is the original one from the 1964 World's Fair.  You've got Mary Blair, Joan Crawford, the Sherman Brothers and a song you can't get out of your head among other things in its history.  Here's the ride:

My other favorite ride here is the Matterhorn Bobsleds.  Who doesn't love this ride? There are two sides to this ride, the Tomorrowland side and the Fantasyland side.  Seasoned riders know that the Tomorrowland side is the slightly faster side and also a little bumpier compared to the Fantasyland side.
